The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has revealed that the refusal of Olisa Metuh, national publicity secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), to refund or sign an undertaking on the N1.2 billion linked to him in the arms scandal is responsible for his continued detention.<\/p>\n

Wilson Uwujaren, spokesman of the commission, disclosed this in a statement issued in Abuja on Tuesday as he faulted the claim of Victor Kwon, national legal adviser of the PDP, that Metuh\u2019s detention was illegal.<\/p>\n

Uwujaren said Metuh would regain freedom as soon as he satisfied the bail conditions, just like the case of Jafaru Isa, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC).<\/p>\n

\u201cThe attention of the EFCC has been drawn to a statement by the National Legal Adviser of the People\u2019s Democratic Party (PDP), Mr Victor Kwon,\u201d the statement read.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe statement has alleged compromise and witch-hunt in the release of a chieftain of the All Progressive Congress (APC), Brig.-Gen. Jafaru Isa, (rtd) by the EFCC.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhile the EFCC will not wish to join issues with Kwon, it is important that the public is presented with the facts regarding the release of Isa.\u201d<\/p>\n

The statement revealed that the APC chieftain was arrested for his involvement in the arms procurement deal to the tune of N170 million.
\u201cUpon his arrest, Isa admitted receiving the money from Dasuki and immediately refunded N100 million with an undertaking to refund the balance in two weeks,\u201d it read.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe reasons above and the fact that his health deteriorated after being admitted to custody prompted the commission to offer the suspect bail.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe bail granted the suspect by the commission does not amount to his exoneration in the case.\u201d<\/p>\n

Uwujaren added that the commission would not be intimidated by the campaign of calumny intended to distract it.<\/p>\n
